It wasn’t perfect in the 60s when Ricardo Montalban was cast to play Khan (a character explicitly described in the episode script of Space Seed as being Sikh, from the Northern regions of India). But considering all of the barriers to representation that Roddenberry faced from the television networks, having a brown-skinned man play a brown character was a hard-won victory. It’s disappointing and demoralizing that with the commercial power of Star Trek in his hands, JJ Abrams chose not to honour the original spirit of the show, or the symbolic heft of the Khan character, but to wield the whitewash brush for … what? […] It’s doubly disappointing when you consider that Abrams was a creator of the television show Lost, which had so many well-rounded and beloved characters of colour in it.

Add to this the secrecy prior to release around Cumberbatch’s role in the film, and what seems like a casting move that would typically be defended by cries of “best actor for the job, not racism” becomes something more cunning, more malicious. Yes, the obfuscation creates intrigue around and interest in the role, but it also prevents advocacy groups like Racebending.com from building campaigns to protest the whitewashing. This happened with the character of the Mandarin in Iron Man 3, as well as ‘Miranda Tate’ in The Dark Knight Rises, who ended up being Talia al Ghul but played by French actress Marion Cotillard. This practice is well in effect in Hollywood; and after the negative press that was generated by angry anti-oppression activists and fans when Paramount had The Last Airbender in the works, studios are wising up. They don’t want their racist practices to be called out, pointed at, and exposed before their movies are released — Airbender proved that these protests create enough bad feeling to affect their bottom line.

great commentary. however, I’d like to note that there’s an extremely welcome plot-twist regarding the Mandarin in IM3 which successfully and deftly subverts a lot of stupid tropes. don’t want to spoil anyone - haven’t seen it myself! I’ve only read really delightful spoilers from everybody else! - but by all accounts, that was actually handled perfectly.

I would love to write more on the comparison between how TPTB for both Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness used the plot twists of The Mandarin and Khan Noonien Singh’s roles in the films as exploitative tactics to minimize, contain and shut down conversations about chromatic representations, racism and the handling of The Mandarin in Iron Man 3 and Khan Noonien Singh in Star Trek Into Darkness, and fortunately, someone already did the research and wrote a more detailed post about the malicious secrecy behind Benedict Cumberbatch being cast as Khan Noonien Singh:

Quite aside from the race issue in and of itself—which is a big, BIG issue, when you are casting a white Brit as a character who is canonically Indian—what happened here was that the handling on the part of the filmmakers has made the fact that John Harrison is, in fact, Khan, a spoiler. So people—including me! in this post!—feel obligated to treat it as a spoiler. But it shouldn’t be a spoiler! It’s not a spoiler! It is a basic piece of information about the movie which also—completely coincidentally, I’m sure —was something that the filmmakers knew to be controversial and offensive! Something that they have known was a problem for over a year.

The handling of spoilers in fannish circles obeys a lot of social etiquette rules that are, in fact, good rules to have: the goal of spoiler tags and spoiler warnings in fannish circles is to preserve the positive story-hearing experiences of other fans […] But the side effect in this case was to effectively mute the communication between people who have seen it, and people who haven’t seen it, within fannish circles, on a detail that was not in any meaningful sense plot-relevant, that was known to be a hot-button political issue within the fandom, and that would, in fact, prevent part of the target audience of this film from paying money to see it.

And this is why I am so angry. The filmmakers, either deliberately or accidentally (SPOILER: I COMPLETELY 100% THINK IT WAS DELIBERATE) manipulated a social custom of their fanbase to limit the amount of potentially revenue-reducing communication that would occur between fans. They have put me in the revolting position of having to put something that I know that a nonzero number of people reading this would consider to merit boycotting this movie in its entirety behind a cut. The makers of Star Trek have not only done something tactless, insensitive, and racist, they have made it hard to talk about, they have made it hard for people to find out about, and they have made it easy for people who would not give them money for it to give them money for it, unknowingly, unwittingly, and unwillingly.

For me, it’s the conversations and increasing awareness and visibility of racial representation that are particularly important and I wish boycotting Star Trek Into Darkness was a choice with which I could be happy making, but I want to support Zoe Saldana as Nyota Uhura and John Cho as Hikaru Sulu. So I chose to see Star Trek Into Darkness and Benedict Cumberbatch was not Khan Noonien Singh in the sense that Khan Noonien Singh would have been awesome if he was played by a chromatic (Sikh) actor and instead he’s not. My dissertation is about online asexual discourse, with particular interest in its development over time. I ran one survey last January, and I am now conducting a survey on asexuality-related concepts and terminology.

What in the hell! Damn, this makes me hella uncomfortable. I’m torn between deleting all my online fanfiction or… hoping that this madness passes. This is so not a good idea.

People would be stealing shit left and right. Hell, they do that now and fanfiction is for free. Let’s not get into the authors who are going to be fucking pissed at this as well they should be because they won’t be getting any of that money based off of their characters.

Lawd.

I’m not here for this at all. I need people to profit from their own creativity, not just jumping off of someone else’s.

the biggest problem with this is that, even if you do decide to sell your fanfic through them, you won’t get much protection. once you publish - according to the details of this program - they own it. they can republish it in an anthology or in another country/language, and you won’t see an additional dime.

furthermore, the owner of the original universe and characters can take your idea and turn it into a film/book/tv show/etc and not have to compensate you at all. it’s typical Amazon bait-and-switch. on the surface, it seems alluring, but you have to read the fine print. the only way property rights’ owners would agree to this is if Amazon promised them a deal they couldn’t refuse. “you’ll get a cut of the profits AND have an endless pool of story ideas that you don’t have to pay for!” the fanfic writer will get screwed. twice.

fanfiction isn’t new. hell, the Star Trek novels are basically authorized fanfiction. at least there, the authors are properly credited and compensated. this sounds like a really, really bad idea.
